Snickerdoodle: Does The Name Have Anything to Do with The Cookie?

Snickerdoodle: Does The Name Have Anything to Do with The Cookie?

2023-01-04

A Snickerdoodle is a type of traditional sugar cookie rolled in cinnamon sugar. It’s basically made with flour, fat, sugar, salt and cinnamon sugar. Sometimes eggs could also be one of the ingredients, adding cream tarter and baking soda to leaven the dough. This could mellow the flavor, making it tangier and allowing them to taste more chewy. Snickerdoodles could be characterized by a cracker surface and be crispy or soft depending on the ingredients used. Snickerdoodles are often referred to as sugar cookies. However, their topping is different, sugar cookies are rolled in white sugar while the snickerdoodles are rolled in a mixture of white sugar and cinnamon.

The origin of snickerdoodles

A few cookbooks claim that snickerdoodles are from German. 1931s Joy of Cooking claims the snickerdoodle is based on the German word Schneckennudel---a German pastry whose name literally translates as ‘snail noodle’. A Schneckennudel is a yeast dough roll more like a cinnamon bun than a snickerdoodle cookie. Some say that snickerdoodles originated in New England and that the name is simply a nonsense word with no particular meaning, originating from the tradition of whimsical cookie names. The Oxford English Dictionary describes the word’s origin is ‘uncertain’, and possibly a portmanteau of the word snicker, an English word with Scottish roots that indicate a “smothered laugh”, and doodle, a German loanword into English meaning a “simple or foolish fellow”, originally derived from the Germanic dudeltopf, meaning "simpleton, noodle, night-cap".

However, no matter where the snickerdoodles came from, with the quick development of dessert mash-ups, the name snickerdoodles has been applied to cinnamon-flavored desserts of all kinds. People let their creativity run wild, you can find snickerdoodle ice cream, cupcakes, tarts, cookie latte and so on. Others still stick to the classic formula to taste the most familiar taste. You can also create your own favorite snickerdoodle recipe.
