Marie Biscuit-Simple yet Delicious

Classic, traditional and crisp, a Marie biscuit is a type of biscuit similar to a rich tea biscuit. They are well known in many parts of the world with many different names due to reasons of languages or manufacturers’ brands (such as galletas María, Marietta, Mariebon).

Marie biscuits are round and usually name embossed upon their top surface. Moreover, there is a circle intricate design embossed on the edges of them. They are eaten as a breakfast or a snack, used in countless dessert recipes and given to babies to munch on as well.



The origin of Marie biscuit


In 1874, the Duke of Edinburgh(who is the second son of Queen Victoria as well) married a Russian Princess called Maria Alexandrovna. To commemorate this royal marriage, the London bakery Peek Freans made this round biscuit with the name Maria stamped in the middle and around the edge a Greek key pattern that was famous in Russia. Later they traveled around the world somehow and became popular even a beloved staple.



How to make Marie biscuit at home


Marie biscuits are made with wheat flour, sugar, oil and vanilla extract.

Ingredient

  • All-Purpose Flour / Maida  150 grams

  • Salt a pinch

  • Milk  30ml

  • Sugar  50ml

  • Unsalted Butter  30ml

  • Baking soda  1/4 teaspoon

 

Steps

  1. Heat up milk, sugar, baking soda in a saucepan till sugar melts and it looks like a cream. Take it off the heat and set aside to cool down.

  2. Preheat the oven to 160 ℃

  3. Mix flour, butter and salt in a bowl. Then rub the butter into the flour with a fork.

  4. Add the liquid made in Step1 into the bowl and form a dough.

  5. Take little parts of dough and roll it thin.

  6. Cut it into raw biscuits with round cutters.

  7. Arrange raw biscuits in a baking tray which is lined with parchment paper and bake for 8 - 10 mins.

  8. Remove and cool on a mesh rack completely.
